Construction Process - February 23, 2002
While the oldest two kids went skiing with the church group, Ben, Barb and I visited for a long weekend.
The weather was un-seasonably warm - roughly 65 degrees during the day.
We brought all the exterior light fixtures in the pick-up.
I must say it is killing me to stay in hotel rooms while we wait for the project to finish.
Ben had a chance to snowboard and toboggan on the hill behind the cabin. Just one small problem with the track - the only way to stop before wrecking into some trees was to crash-land.
I tried a few runs until it became obvious that crash-landing into the rocks and debris wasn't too smart.
We'll design a smooth, SAFE, track for next winter and beyond.
Much progress since the last visit.
The kitchen cabinets and almost complete, the island is done including the rock face, the interior staining is complete, most of the interior trim is finished, the basement interior doors are installed, and the underlayment is down for the tile. The target closing date is March 25th (2002).
The place was alive with activity and visitors on Friday including Mark, Jack and their crew from DeHaven Enterprises, Randy Helf (finish carpenter), Mike Newsome (flooring), and of course, Henry.
Also met a prospective log-home owner planning to build a Pacific Log Home in Winter Park (Hi Mike - nice meeting you).
A few shots of the kitchen area.
Here is a really cool shot of the front side at dusk.
The stain color is perfect!
Ben and Barb discuss furniture placement.
Here are the beetle-kill doors in the basement. I can't wait to see how these beautiful doors will look against the logs upstairs!
The Australian Cypress was delivered while we visited.
The wood must spend 10-14 days acclimating to the humidity and temperature levels in the cabin before it can be installed.
As you can see in the picture, the grain is outrageous and should be spectacular!
Here is a shot looking up towards the ceiling and side wall showing the stain and finish work.
Lastly, here are some shots of some 9' tall hand-crafted totem poles we are considering.
The artist sent me these photos last week.
I have not seen the poles in person, but WOW, they are simply spectacular and would make a great addition to the cabin!
